Does the quality of motivation matter
Daily Coaching Question #14
Today’s life coaching question of the day is:
Does the quality of your motivation matter as long as you finish the job?
This question comes from my thoughts on Daniel Pink’s book Drive. In his book, he makes the distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. These two forms have really had me thinking about how the quality of my own motivation influences my work. When I do business activities, such as taxes or other administrative tasks, I can sense that it is all extrinsic and conditional motivation. However, when I am really interested in my work and my motivation comes from within, I see a change in the quality of my work. This has prompted me to stop making a to-do list, and start making a motivation list.
I invite you to think about the things you need to do in order to get into an intrinsic state of motivation, and ask yourself:
Does the quality of my motivation matter as long as I finish the job?
If the answer is yes, start reflecting on how you can reach that state of internal motivation and improve the quality of your work today.
