Trust and Mistakes

October 07, 2012 by John Andrew Williams

The presence (or lack) of trust has a big impact on the response when someone makes a mistake.  Trust is built up over time, and we teach people to trust or distrust us based on our reliability and integrity.

The ability to freely make and recover from mistakes is an essential part of being creative.  Here are some of the things I hear students say when they try something different in an academic setting:

  • “I tried to study in a different way.”
  • “I tried something different with my paper.”
  • “I used a different system to keep track of my homework.”

Do you trust them?

Do you think the students trust school?
