Jeremy’s Choice (and Discipline)

September 22, 2012 by John Andrew Williams

Discipline comes from the Latin word discere meaning to learn.

Jeremy Gleick is a junior at UCLA who has spent an hour a day learning something completely new.  From Ancient Greek lectures to Blacksmithing classes for the past two years, Jeremy has spent one hour a day becoming a polymath.

Clearly Jeremy has tapped into the discipline of learning.  Or maybe he’s realized that the two are the same.

I’m struck by three things:

  1. The structure and the discipline of Jeremy to stick it out even if he’s at a friend’s house or busy for the evening.
  2. He doesn’t have kids yet, but if/when he does, he’ll experience a renaissance of learning and seeing the world fresh again through a kid’s eyes
  3. It’s easy to do with the amount of information online.

What’s your discipline?
