I was talking to my dad on the phone yesterday, and I apologized for not calling more often. I explained that I’m busy starting up this company that provides Life Coaching for teens.
My dad laughed and said, “You’re a little past the start-up phase, son.”
He’s right. I’ve been coaching teenagers for eight years, four years doing it full-time.
Yet I still feel like I’m in the middle of a start-up.
I mentioned the exchange to another business owner, who has been in business about a year-and-a-half. He said the same thing. “Yep, for sure I’m still in the start-up phase.”
I wonder if Steve Jobs felt like he was still in the start-up phase of Apple. His resignation speech with “Apple’s best days are ahead” hints at it.
But maybe keeping that start-up energy is a key to maintaining a successful, thriving business or anything else for that matter. I’ve been a father for more than five years, yet I still feel like I’m starting over sometimes and learning how to be a better father.
Maybe maintaining that start-up energy is ok, or even more than ok. I’d even venture to say it’s necessary.
