When someone is in business, especially a service business, the biggest competitor isn’t the person in the same field. The biggest competitor is the indifference many people feel about getting help, thinking that it’s easier to do nothing or to do it themselves.
As high school students write their college essays, they face the same challenge but often don’t know it. They tend to write essays that don’t inspire or don’t take creative risks in telling their stories. The thinking is that “I don’t want to take too much of a risk because I might blow my chances.”
Students correctly believe that they are competing with other students for the admission spots. However, writing an essay from that point-of-view rarely produces inspired work.
The problem with such an approach is that Indifference will win. Their essays are read with a “meh” reaction.
Writing to challenge Indifference produces a much different outcome.
